News from Tynemouth Haven

Due to storm damage, the viewing platform for the Tynemouth Tyne Kittiwake colony has been closed. Staff from the Port of Tyne are guarding the area to ensure it remains closed.  The pier has also been closed.  The nesting Kittiwakes and Sand Martins appeared very well and peacefully continued to nest on the cliffs nearby.  At this location birds are more vulnerable to severe weather but are closer to the sea and their food source.

At this time it is unclear when and if this area will be repaired.  As our climate continues to change, and we experience more severe weather patterns, are coastal towns are likely to suffer damage at times.  Local press has talked about repairs to the pier, so it is likely this will be included. If you’re in the area, please take care.
