Some of the locations where the Tyne Kittiwakes settle every year to raise young chicks are relatively peaceful with no anti-bird deterrents present. The owners of these buildings welcome the Kittiwakes to nest.  The Kittiwake colonies present on the » Tyne Bridge    » Baltic Gallery
» Guildhall Clock Tower    » Saltmeadows Tower and the
» Akzo Nobel Paint Factory have been assigned green-flagged status by Kittiwakes upon the Tyne and we will make every effort to help conserve and protect these core colonies.

Red flagged sites

Sadly anti-bird spikes, netting and avi-shock sprout from a variety of buildings where the owners don’t welcome Kittiwakes or other birds to nest or spend time there.  Kittiwakes upon the Tyne is raising their voice for the removal of any anti-bird deterrents that are present, where they have been proven to injure Kittiwakes. Shockingly, some have been present now for up to seven years, and no action has been taken which would see them removed.

Are the owners of these buildings checking
on the anti-bird deterrents they have installed to deter Tyne Kittiwakes from nesting ?”

Changes are needed to prevent further unnecessary suffering and losses.  Should anyone find a trapped or injured Kittiwake please could you contact
the RSPCA’s 24-hour cruelty and advice helpline on 0300 1234 999. To help officers locate birds in trouble;  explaining where they can be viewed from is very useful.
